Stopped in for the first time on a Saturday night. Very busy but was able to actually find a table for two without a reservation. I tried the Cielo Burger and my date tried the Cajan Meatloaf sandwich. I was extremely pleased with the burger. Flavorful, tender, and juicy; the onions were actually grilled to perfection and the red peppers were done perfectly accenting the favors perfectly. The absolute best burger I have had in a long long time. My Date's Cajan Meatloaf sandwich had a little kick at the end, and, I quote "didn't taste like meatloaf. Satisfying but just ok. We will definitely return and try the short ribs, and some other entree's. My standby will definitely be the Cielo Burger! Service was great even though extremely busy and the servers were attentive and friendly with great attitudes. I will say that I was disappointed with the bread pudding which was indicated as a specialty. A little dry and the sauce was over sweet. Overall one of the better small restaurants in Des Moines. Can't wait to return and try another entree. Yummmmmm

I was pleasantly surprised by this nice little place in Valley Junction. The service was great, the sangria special of the night was delicious, and the menu items were unique. We shared the pulled pork nachos and the pulled pork sandwich, which were both wonderful. We also had reuben egg rolls, which were surprisingly good. I think it's really neat that they have egg roll "specials" that change each day--they're unique and very tasty! We'll definitely be going back to try their smoked gouda mac and cheese and cajun meatloaf!

Had the Cobb salad, and it was like there was a, party in my mouth and everyone was invited. There were carefully cut baby tomatoes, blue cheese, flour tortilla chips, and a perfect amount of tender, seasoned chicken. WARNING: The house dressing may cause you to pass out from flavor overload. The Parmesan and garlic combination was the BEST tasting dressing that I've ever had. They have a great wine and beer selection too.

Being a WDM local I enjoy exploring new establishments near me. I heard about Coopers back when I was a regualr at Limey's Pub just a few blocks away and I new Cooper and a few others that worked there. Cooper is a great guy and you should ask him how he met his wife sometime lol Myself and a friend stopped in here awhile ago and although I did not try any of the food as we were already eating elsewhere that night this is a small friendly neighborhood style bar and restaurant. The word of mouth must be getting around as my own father asked me the other day whether or not I have tried Cooper's as his friend was mentioning how good the food was...I look forward to stopping in again soon.

We had a private party of 30+ at Cooper's. The food was great! Good service and the perfect atmosphere. Cooper's is that neighborhood pub you just want to spend an evening eating, drinking & relaxing with friends.

The first time I ate here, I got the pulled pork nachos and smoked gouda mac and cheese. I have been here several more times and can't bring myself to order anything else. I have tried the mac and cheese at probably every restaurant that offers it in the Metro, and I haven't ever been happy with any until I tried this version. Not only is it delicious, but combined with the nachos, it is the best cure for a hangover! Really attentive service as well, plus they know their way around a dirty martini!

We had a gift certificate to this place and the giver raved about it. Wish we could say the same. I think they have potential but this experience was really disappointing. 1) some of the tables are very close to the point that you are about 6 inches away. They have too many of those tall tables suitable for drinking not eating. 2) One of the party ordered $19 seafood ravioli. Portion was so small it reminded me of an hors douvre. It came with ONE breadstick, carrots and salad. Breadsticks were the cheap unremarkable type. The salad was mostly iceburg and not even cold. The dish had exactly three raviolis in it and although tasty, was a ridiculously small portion for an entrée. The carrots that they served it with were those little snack type carrots that were sautéed and overcooked. Carrot sticks as a side vegetable? Really? 3) I ordered a Cielo hamburger and it was good. Fries were tasty but a meager portion. I ordered a side salad and again warm iceburg lettuce with croutons that were of the cheapest quality. The service was quite adequate and the waitress was nice. I think this place needs to increase the portions of the entrée and spruce up attention to details....like quality bread and real vegetables.

Been to Cooper's now at least 10 times. Never disappointed. Great food and service!!! Their Bourbon Glazed Junction Burger is the "best" burger in the state in my opinion!!! Try this place and I guarantee it will quickly become a favorite.

excellent food, had the meatloaf meltdown, it was like a grilled cheese with meatloaf on it very good. Staff was friendly & very helpful. Can't wait to go back & try the mac & cheese & basically everything else on the menu.

Easily my favorite restaurant! I love the layers of flavors in everything! Nothing is ever lacking for complexity or tastefulness. Also a great atmosphere and they are willing to accommodate special dietary needs which is awesome! Definitely give it a try if you haven't--it's worth it!

After seeing Cooper's on 5th got voted "Best Kept Secret" in the Cityview survey, we had to give it a try! I will admit I'd never heard of it before and I love finding yummy new places. We arrived around 6:45 pm on a Friday night. Upon entering, I was surprised how small of a space it was. There are three booths, around eight tables, and a small bar area with maybe ten seats. We were told there was a 15-20 min wait for a table for two. No problem, we'll just go hang at the bar (other options were stand by the door or go watch food be prepped). We ended up waiting no more than ten minutes. We already had our drinks from the bar but our waitress made sure we didn't need refills. She then described items on their menu as well as the special. We were very interested in the eggrolls which were Pulled Pork Wasabi. Those were delicious! I opted to order the Ravioli Randingo while my husband had the special for the night, Walleye which had an almond crust. Both dinners came with either a soup or salad to start. My husband had the soup (Clam Chowder) which he said was good but not the best he's ever had. I had the salad with the house dressing. That house dressing is yummy with parmesan and garlic! Our main courses were good. The Ravioli Randingo had lots of seafood on it which was a pleasant surprise as many places skimp on the actual seafood. I loved the sauce on the ravioli. The breadstick was ok. My husband enjoyed his fish minus all the bones that were left in it. He was getting a bit frustrated with having to remove the tiny bones and even stated that he thought not finishing the fish due to the bones. Our waitress was rather attentive to begin with but then seemed to disappear towards the end (after we got our food). It would have been nice to have a couple more check-ins and a more timely delivery of the bill. Overall though, the food was good, the atmosphere is laid back, and we had an enjoyable dinner.

Love this place. They have a fairly limited menu - but overall the quality is superb. The reason that they get 4 instead of 5 stars is because the help can sometimes be less than stellar. They get full real quick - and instead of offering to hold a table and let them know when they are free - they just send people away. More than once I have actually seen tables clear 5 minutes after they send someone away. Last time we saw a group of 5 wait for like 30 minutes for a table - the hostess didnt even get them a menu. They were leaving when my mom and i decided to go - so I ran out and told them. Over all a great little whole in the wall pub with great food - just need better training for their servers.

My girlfriend and I have been here twice. Both times we had the pulled pork nachos as an app. They are very good. The nachos are big and taste homemade. It had a creamy type of cheese on it that was excellent, I can't place what kind it was though, I'm thinking there was some goat cheese in it. The pork was borderline dry but had excellent flavor. I would order them again. The first time I ate there I had the Bourbon Glazed Junction Burger. It was a standard fare bacon cheeseburger. I was hoping it would have some bourbon flavor, but it was absent. Second time we ate there, we both had the house special. It was called Gun Powder rubbed sirloin steak. It was cooked medium well as I asked, the gf wanted medium rare and it was cooked appropriately. My steak had a bit more gristle than my gf's oddly enough. I wish I had ordered the smoked gouda mac n' cheese. Ambiance is intimate, small space, dimly lit. Service was good too. We will return someday.

Great restaurant. Nice atmosphere. It's a little small, but that was part of the charm! They have a nice, small menu that is unique and appealing. Everything sounded amazing, and everything we tried WAS amazing! I can't wait to go back!

I love this restaurant. I have been there several times and am definitely looking forward to my next visit. The food is great. The service is attentive. Its unique and intimate atmosphere makes it a great place to take close friends and family. Highly recommended!

Great service! Wonderful atmosphere! Good sandwiches & appetizers. Avoid the salad. Not fresh but the house dressing was yummy!

I agree that this is one of the best kept secrets! Cooper's on 5th has an excellent bartender; they have quite a few cocktails on the menu. I tried a variety of Moscow Mule flavors and their Vodka Gimlet was on point. The eggroll du jour was buffalo chicken (perfect app for two) and the special, steak medallions, were cooked and seasoned perfectly. Ended our meal with a perfect, classic bread pudding. The service was impressive as well! I loved the ambience! Also, they have Not Your Father's Root Beer! Impossible to find!

Again Yelp is in desperate need for half stars. I am knocking it down, not due to what I had (Meatloaf Sandwich), but for what my wife and daughter had. My wife had the Blue Cheese Burger and it was over cooked (never was offered choice of doneness) and the blue cheese was non-existent and extremely mild. My daughter had the pulled pork nachos. The chips are excellent. Very light and crisp, but the pork was very dry and very greasy. Kudos for the cheese. Very good. Now for the good. My meal. The meatloaf was so tender and the Cajun seasoning was perfect with just enough spice to cut through the cheese and tomato sauce. I have found a new favorite sandwich. I also had the wedding soup. The meatball in it was amazing, full of flavor and complemented the soup very well. All in all, I will be back. Great atmosphere, and decent food.

Good food, nice atmosphere, reasonable prices and fantastic service... you can't ask for more than that. Cooper's takes reservations, so I strongly encourage you to have them going to the restaurant, as the seating is limited. However, they serve a full dinner at the bar, which is where my family and I ate. I enjoyed the seafood ravioli with a house salad. It was an ample serving and I really enjoyed the taste. I think Cooper's is a great selection for dining out in Valley Junction. They will definitely see me back again.

We had a fun weekend lunch. The atmosphere is fun / cozy. We liked our food a lot - especially enjoyed the flatbread taco pizza and their fries are tasty. However, the portion sizes aren't very big. I wouldn't have been satisfied with just my meal if we hadn't also gotten the flatbread as an appetizer. (And I normally don't eat very large portions.)

$5 Martinis on Tuesdays. Get the short ribs! They literally fall off the bone. The creamy parmesan dressing is very tasty.

Great environment! The bar and the setting are super cool. The food is great, but a little pricey for what you get. The menu is also pretty limited. With that said, we will definitely be back - great place!!

This is one of the greatest finds I've stumbled across in the Des Moines area. A family member of mine recently relocated to the Valley Junction neighborhood in West Des Moines. When in Valley Junction you might pass right by this place. It has a very quiet and unassuming demeanor on it's exterior. After trying some of the more obvious selections in the area we decided to poke our heads in the door on a whim. We were really pleased that we did. This place is setup in a very unique configuration. I couldn't tell right off the bat if Cooper's was a bar or a restaurant. It's dimly lit with the bar prominently displayed. You'll also have to venture though the kitchen area to use the rest room. None of this is of particular importance however. Keep an eye out for Cooper's "Egg Roll" that changes daily. When I visited I had a very large Chicken Parmesan Egg Roll which consisted of large flavorful pieces of chicken breast and marinara sauce that could have stood on its on as an entree, but it was encapsulated in a egg roll wrapper. Oh yeah, I hate and I mean hate meatloaf, but a recommendation from our waiter a very quiet voice in my head urged me to allay my fears and sample the Cajun Blackened Meatloaf here. It was, and is the only meatloaf I have ever enjoyed in my life and the only one I will ever have without compunction again. This is a great casual dining location with some panache that will surprise you and leave you very satisfied.

We both liked the chicken dumpling soup. The Shirt ribs were fantastic! The ravioli was tasty but a tiny bit too creamy / oily. The peach cobbler was definitely home made and also very good. Skip the chains and hit the real Valley in West Des Moines!

Went to Cooper's on a Saturday night with my wife. I must say that the Valley Junction part of town is kind of sad. It just looks like an old worn down mainstreet that is slowly dying. I do hope that the establishments stay in business but from the looks of the area it looks like it will be a ghost town soon. On to the review, my wife and I walked in and were a bit taken aback at how empty the place was. It is medium to small space but I would say it was only about 10% full. We ordered the pulled pork nachos to start. Very good albeit a bit greasy although these were nachos so what do you expect...very good, we ate them all. My wife and I then opted for burgers, she had the junction burger and i had the cielo burger. both were actually really good. juicy, hot and well seasoned. i wish the buns were more distinctive but the fresh patties were very good. The wedge fries were nice and hot and fresh. My wife also had a side salad which she got with the house dressing. The house dressing is great, especially to dip fries into, although be warned there is A LOT of garlic in the dressing. RAW garlic. So if you don't like that huge garlicky flavor to linger then do not getting the dressing. All in all pretty good, a cut above the standard bar food. Not sure if we will be back but it was definitely good and good value for the money.

Went with a friend for her birthday on a Tuesday which I guess was 5 dollar martini night. We each got one, her the fruit punch and I asked for a lemon drop as they did not have any sour options on the menu. Both were tasty, nothing special. We split the zucchini fries appetizer which was tasty, but again nothing out of this world. We then ordered the Gouda Mac and cheese and the bourbon burger with side salads and split them. So I got to try both. Mac and cheese was very good, I wish we would have added bacon or sausage, though. Burger was also good but could have used more sauce as all that came on it was bacon, sauce, and cheese so it got a little blah at times. House parmesan dressing was very tasty. We then got the chocolate cake dessert which was what you would expect- very moist and rich. Overall it was a good experience and very reasonable prices. No complaints, but nothing to warrant 5 stars. Cute place with great staff and some really fun regulars who will keep you entertained!

I have now been here twice. Once for lunch and another time for appetizers and drinks. Both times I have received excellent customer service. The last time I was in my friend and I split the spinach, artichoke, crab dip. At first we were skeptical about including crab in a very classic appetizer, but it proved delicious. I generally do not like crab. The sandwich/soup I had on my first visit was also excellent. I enjoy the relaxed, yet classy atmosphere and one of the best Bloody Marys I've found in the metro. A welcome addition to the Valley Junction area.

We ate there on Friday night while visiting family in Des Moines. We had the pulled pork egg rolls which were delicious. I had the Smoked Gouda Mac and Cheese. This is quite possibly the best mac and cheese dish I have ever eaten. They use the large size shells and bake it with the cheese which gets very melty and gooey and covers everything perfectly. Everyone in the family was very happy with their meal. Our orders ranged from burgers to the Cuban sandwich. I only wish this restaurant was in Denver so I could eat there all the time. Oh, and make sure you look at all the wood carving done up at the bar.
